What are Marine Collagen Peptides?
Marine Collagen Peptides are derived from the skins of wild, deep-sea ocean fish such as cod, haddock and pollock. Peptides are short strings or chains of amino acids that are linked together via peptide bonds. Put simply, they are much smaller versions of proteins and are more easily processed and utilized by the human body.
Collagen is the most abundant protein found within the body. It is found within bones, connective tissue, ligaments, tendons, the skin, and cartilage. The problem is that, although plentiful at first, as we grow older we find that our collagen levels gradually decline. This downward trend typically begins in our late-to-mid twenties and becomes more pronounced with the passing of each year.
Hydrolyzed marine collagen peptides have been broken down into smaller protein units, making it easier for the body to use them as it is more easily absorbed.
Marine collagen peptide supplements come in many forms, though typically you’ll find they come in powdered or liquid form. They are designed to be consumed daily to replace collagen lost naturally as we age.
What are the Benefits of Marine Collagen Peptides?
As collagen is the most abundant protein found within the body, it should come as no surprise to learn that hydrolyzed marine collagen peptides can offer a wide range of health benefits for the human body.
Here are just some of the most prominent benefits of marine collagen peptide supplements.
Great for the skin
One of the most commonly known benefits of marine collagen supplements is the fact that they are so beneficial for the skin.
Collagen in the skin helps to give skin a healthy glow, while also plumping and firming it up. A loss of collagen can leave the skin thin, saggy, and wrinkled, which can leave people looking old and haggard.
Marine collagen peptides help to replenish natural collagen stores in the body, helping to make the skin firmer and plumper, while also giving it a healthy glow.
Moisturizes the skin
Another skin-related benefit of marine collagen peptides is the fact that it has been found to moisturize and hydrate the skin.
Dry skin can be uncomfortable and can leave the skin looking dull and lifeless. Collagen helps to moisturize and hydrate the skin, leaving it feeling soft and smooth and looking healthy and vibrant.
Promotes Joint and Bone Health
Another benefit of taking marine collagen supplements is the fact that they promote joint health.
As mentioned, collagen is found within the joints, ligaments, and tendons and a lack of this protein can leave you prone to inflammation, arthritis, osteoporosis, and general joint pain and discomfort.
Marine collagen peptides help to lubricate the joints and strengthen the bones, leaving you less-susceptible to age-related joint and bone conditions such as arthritis and osteoporosis.
Studies have found that collagen supplements can help to ease joint stiffness, reduce joint pain, improve mobility, and increase bone mineral density by as much as 7%.
Promotes lean muscle growth
Protein is vital for muscle growth, repair, regeneration, and recovery, and marine collagen peptides are no exception.
10% of our muscle tissues are comprised of collagen, so you can see why it’s so important to ensure that we get enough in our bodies. Collagen peptides have been found to help facilitate post-workout protein synthesis, thereby allowing the body to begin regenerating new muscle tissue following a workout.
Other benefits include:
- Promotes healthy hair
- Promotes healthy skin
- Cardiovascular benefits
- Promotes a youthful complexion
- Promotes lean muscle tissue
- Great for the joints
- Promotes healthy bone tissue
- Improves gut and digestive health
- Strengthens the immune system
What’s the Difference Between Hydrolyzed Collagen and Collagen Peptides?
When browsing supplement stores for collagen supplements, it’s important to know the science and scientific terms associated with various products. Collagen peptides and hydrolyzed collagen for example, may sound different, but the terms are actually interchangeable.
You see, in order for peptides to be obtained, the collagen in question must first be subjected to hydrolysis. Full-length marine collagen undergoes a process known as hydrolysis, which breaks the protein bonds down into peptides.
Hydrolysis is a chemical reaction in which water molecules break down one, or several chemical bonds. By breaking the collagen protein bonds down into smaller peptides, the body finds it easier to absorb them and utilize them.
Put simply however, collagen peptides cannot be present without the process of hydrolysis, meaning hydrolyzed collagen will yield collagen peptides.
What’s the Difference Between Bovine Collagen and Marine Collagen?
When shopping for collagen supplements, it’s easy to find yourself confused and overwhelmed, as there are all manner of different types of collagen out there to choose from. Most commonly however, you’ll find that bovine collagen and marine collagen are the two most popular.
But what are the differences? Well, put very simply, marine collagen is derived from fish skins, and bovine collagen comes from cattle. Once the cattle has been used for food, the remaining cow hides, bones and connective tissues are then processed to extract the collagen from them.
Bovine collagen contains more Type III and Type II collagen than marine, which is primarily comprised of Type I. Type I collagen mainly supports the skin, hair, and bones, so it is typically used mainly for cosmetic purposes, though there are still plenty of health benefits to be enjoyed. Marine collagen is also more easily absorbed than bovine, as it has a much higher bioavailability rate.
What’s the Difference Between Fish Collagen and Marine Collagen?
Marine collagen and fish collagen are one and the same and are simply marketed differently. You should always read the list of ingredients for a full breakdown of what is in your collagen powder.
Which Form of Collagen is Most Effective?
Answering this question is a bit like answering the question of which supplement is the healthiest.
Different supplements do different things in the body and provide different benefits, and with collagen, this is no different.
Bovine collagen for example, contains more Type II collagen which plays more of a beneficial role when it comes to bone and joint health. Marine collagen is still beneficial for the bones and joints, but it may not be as beneficial as bovine.
On the flipside, marine collagen peptides are richer in Type I collagen, which provides more beauty and cosmetic benefits. Marine collagen is therefore better for the hair, skin, and nails. It also has a greater level of bioavailability, so the body absorbs more and wastes less.
In short, though, there is no one clear answer because all different types of collagen provide their own unique list of benefits.
Why are Marine Collagen Peptides so Expensive?
There is a common misconception surrounding marine collagen peptides, in which people believe that they are vastly overpriced and are very expensive. This is not the case.
Sure, hydrolyzed marine collagen peptides are not what you would call cheap, but they are not as expensive as you might think. Furthermore, when you consider the amount of work that goes into producing them, you’ll understand exactly why they have such a price tag attached to them.
Marine collagen peptides are derived from sustainable marine life of the highest quality. They also undergo vast amounts of production to ensure that they do what they need to do. The quality of the ingredients and the work that goes into them, along with the vast array of benefits they provide, is therefore reflected in the price.
Is it Okay to Take Marine Collagen Every Day?
Yes. Not only is it okay to take marine collagen supplements every day, it is actually beneficial to take them on a daily basis.
Numerous studies have shown that marine collagen supplements are not only safe when consumed daily, but that they are also more beneficial when taken daily, as they are a wonderful way to naturally boost collagen levels within the body.
At What Ages Should You Take Marine Collagen?
While there is no one true answer to this question, studies have found that it is generally okay to begin taking marine collagen peptide supplements from the age of around 20 – 25 onwards, or once you begin to see and/or feel more obvious signs of aging.
Experts recommend that people begin using them early on in life, in their early-to-mid twenties just to ensure that they help to get a head start on the body’s natural depletion of collagen as they grow older.
Should I Take Collagen in the Morning or at Night?
As far as when to take marine collagen supplements, it really all depends on how much you are taking.
Different people take different amounts for different reasons. If you are taking two or three servings of the supplement for example, is it a good idea to spread your dosages out and take them throughout the day such as morning, midday, and evening perhaps?
If you take just one serving however, it doesn’t really matter what time you consume it, as long as it is taken on an empty stomach for maximum absorption.
Can I Take Collagen with Coffee?
Yes.
While it is recommended that you take collagen supplements on an empty stomach, it is okay to take it with coffee.
Marine collagen is easily absorbed, so don’t worry too much about milk and/or sugar in your coffee, though if you are concerned about absorption levels, just go ahead and have your marine collagen with a black coffee and you’ll be good to go.
How Can You Tell if Marine Collagen is Working?
In order to tell if marine collagen is working, you really need to think about what you’re taking it for.
If you’re taking marine collagen supplements for cosmetic purposes, the obvious way of telling if the collagen is working is to look in the mirror. If your skin and hair looks and feels healthy, this is obviously a good sign.
As for the health benefits, as soon as you find your joints hurting less and feeling less stiff, this is of course another great sign that the collagen is working.
What Should I Look for When Buying Marine Collagen?
When buying marine collagen, it’s important to know what to look for in order to guarantee you the best possible results.
The best collagen supplements are derived from the skins of wild caught sustainable species of deep-sea ocean fish such as cod, haddock and pollock.
Is Marine Collagen Hard on Your Stomach and Kidneys?
As long as you use marine collagen peptide supplements as instructed, not only are these products safe they’re actually very healthy and very beneficial as well.
Marine collagen peptides for example, have been found to be beneficial for digestive health and gut health, meaning they’re good for the stomach. As long as you use them as instructed and don’t exceed the recommended dosage, you should experience no adverse side effects at all.

1st time trying this product, so far so good. I add 2 tlbs to my shake and good to go
Fantastic! Love it! Drink it in the afternoon with my 2nd and last coffee of the day. It dissolves well, no flavour which for me is fantastic!
Great tasting; no chemicals;
I’ve been using this product for about a year! I love it, no additional “things” Larger quantities would be nice, but I just order 2.
Larger quantities would be nice 😊
Beautiful, clean, smooth product. Mixes really well with my other smoothie ingredients.
I wish I could buy larger quantities.
Not much of a taste. I mix it with my coffee. I haven’t used it long enough to know if it’s doing anything yet.
My daily routine, one scoop of collagen and one scoop of vanilla whey protein powder each morning in my coffee…so yummy.
Too early to say about the product. I’ve just started to use it, but great taste that I add to my shakes. I’ve giving it a 3 until I can see results. Less wrinkles!
Tastes great and easy to use.
Love it
So far so good. No strong flavour or nasty aftertaste! Does not disturb my stomach. I will need more time to comment on efficacy.
Tasty and blends well (just don’t let it sit in liquid without stirring for long…it will form clumps). I’ve only be using it for a week so I can’t really say if it’s having any kind of beneficial effect but it helps that the taste is very neutral (like powdered milk). I put it in my breakfast.
